FAT_ShopKind_meat_roster_scores_2026-07-31.csv — 96 rows (86 Best Choice, 10 Second-Best Choice), one row per supplier, with certifications, pathway class, disclosure counts, and a status and credibility label for each of FAT’s sixteen categories.
What this dataset is
- Population. Online-orderable meat suppliers listed in ASPCA ShopKind’s “Best Choice” and “Second-Best Choice” tiers, human-food meat categories only (beef, bison, chicken, turkey, lamb, goat, pork). This is a subset of ShopKind, not its full roster.
- Retrieval. Roster pulled from the ShopKind public search interface on July 31, 2026, with follow-up checks August 1–2, 2026. ShopKind listings change; this file is a frozen snapshot.
- Unit. One supplier (farm, ranch, or brand as listed). A supplier holding several certifications appears once, with all certifications listed. Four brands appear in both tiers (one row per tier).
- Exclusions. Three goat dairies for which no eligible online meat product was found in the pages reviewed (Big Picture Farm, Fraga Farmstead Creamery, Prairie Fruits Farm & Creamery).
Columns
- certifications — as shown in ShopKind’s data for the supplier.
- pathway_class — FAT’s grouping: Dedicated welfare certification (Animal Welfare Approved, Certified Humane, or Regenerative Organic Certified present); Grass-fed or GAP Step 4 (American Grassfed Association or Global Animal Partnership present, no dedicated welfare cert); Habitat / soil / organic-centered only (Audubon Conservation Ranching, Real Organic Project, or Regenified only). Best Choice totals: 41 / 25 / 20.
- disclosed_of_16 — categories counted as disclosed out of sixteen, FAT’s published method. This is a provisional floor: see limitations.
- disclosed_of_applicable — the same count with Quality/Grade (not mandatory) and, where no organic claim is made, Organic removed from the denominator.
- c01–c16 — status for each category (Disclosed, Partial, Not found, Not confirmed, Not applicable) with the credibility of the disclosure in brackets: audited (third-party certification), usda (USDA-reviewed), affidavit (producer statement), marketing (unverified).
- chicken_growth_note — breed or growth-rate basis for chicken suppliers.
Limitations — read before citing
- Age at slaughter (6), processor establishment number (7), and quality/grade (14) were not checked against physical package labels in this pass. They are recorded as “Not confirmed,” which lowers every count. A missing value here means “not confirmed,” not “concealed.”
- Equal weighting of the sixteen categories is FAT’s analytical choice, not a validated measure of welfare or overall transparency.
- Credibility labels follow the supplier’s certification; they have not been confirmed product by product.
- Breed entries reflect what producers state on their own materials; a named breed is not independently verified.
- Pathway classes reflect certifications, not ASPCA’s species-by-tier eligibility rules, which differ by species (see aspca.org/shopkind/guide/products).
- Narrative claims about named businesses (directory mismatches, plant-level enforcement records, retail country-of-origin comparisons) are not part of this dataset.
Corrections are welcome: if you are a listed supplier and a value is wrong, contact dirkadams@farmanimaltransparency.com with a link or label photo and we will update the file and note the change.
