This Privacy Policy applies to information collected through our website, the FAT mobile apps for iPhone and Android, and any other online services that link to it. Section 2(d) describes how the mobile apps differ from the website. It does not apply to information collected offline or through third-party websites or services that are not under our control.

2. Information We Collect

We may collect the following categories of information:

a. Information You Provide to Us

• Contact details such as your name, email address, and any other information you submit through contact forms or email.
• Content of messages or inquiries you send us (for example, questions about labels, feedback, or requests to collaborate).
• Optional information you provide if you sign up for updates, research participation, or similar offerings.

b. Information Collected Automatically

When you visit or use the Services, we and our service providers may automatically collect certain information using cookies, pixels, and similar technologies, such as:

• IP address and general location (e.g., city, state, country);
• Device and browser type, operating system, and settings;
• Pages viewed, links clicked, and referring/exit pages;
• Date and time of your visit and general usage patterns.

c. Information from Third Parties

d. The FAT Mobile Apps (iPhone and Android)

The FAT App is a separate product from this website, and it handles information differently. The app does not use cookies, does not contain advertising or third-party analytics software, and does not create an account or collect your name, email address, location, or any device or advertising identifier.

• Label scanning happens on your device. When you photograph a label, the text is read on the phone itself. Your photographs are never uploaded to us.
• Scan history stays on your device. Past scans are saved in the app's own local storage. We cannot see them, and deleting the app deletes them.
• Lookups. When you search an establishment number or brand, or when the app retrieves a processing plant's public regulatory record, that request goes to farmanimaltransparency.com to fetch public government data. No personal information or device identifier is attached.
• Unrecognized-brand reports (iPhone only). If the app cannot match the brand on a label to its brand database, the iPhone version sends us a short excerpt of the scanned label text — capped at 120 characters, with digits, email addresses, web addresses, and phone-shaped numbers removed first — along with the app version and your device's language setting. We use this only to find brands missing from our database and add them. The excerpt is not tied to you or your device, the same text is not sent twice in a session, and our server stores only a one-way cryptographic hash of the originating IP address, never the address itself. The Android version does not send this.

Apart from the unrecognized-brand reports described above, the app transmits nothing about how you use it. We do not track which products you scan, and we have no way to connect a scan to an individual person.

3. How We Use Your Information

We may use the information we collect for purposes including:

• Operating, maintaining, and improving the FAT website and related Services;
• Responding to your inquiries, requests, and correspondence;
• Analyzing how visitors use the Services to guide content, design, and functionality improvements;
• Developing and refining educational materials, label comparisons, scoring systems, and research content;
